Michael Ellner on hypnosis for chronic pain

Michael Ellner on hypnosis for chronic pain

I believe that the last word on the use of prescription drugs for the relief of pain should be between a doctor and his or her patients, however, the fact is that most people living with chronic pain are not aware of the evidence-based alternatives to drugs because their doctors are not aware of alternatives like hypnosis.

A new drug, “Zohydro”, that is set to hit the market, is a cause for serious concern.  This is yet another approval in which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ignored their own Advisory Committee which strongly voted against approval (11 votes against and 2 votes for approval)! The FDA’s own Advisory Committee stated, “The FDA should not approve (extended-release and long-acting) opioids without tamper-resistant or abuse-deterrent formulations”.  Quite frankly, this approval should raise a lot of red flags and indicates the urgent need for heads to roll at the FDA!

According to The Partnership of drugfree.org, Attorney Generals from twenty eight states, along with four US senators, have requested the overturn of the FDA approval!  Also, the sale of the Zohydro will be banned in Massachusetts. There is good reason for this because there are many other opioid drugs currently available and there was no need or reason to put Zohydro on the market without first making it tamper-proof to avoid this potent drug’s huge potential for abuse!

As I pointed out, people living in chronic pain are often quite surprised to learn that pain relief without drugs is possible.  But it really is!  Physicians today are educated specifically to prescribe drugs to relieve symptoms and are ignorant of the efficacy of well-documented alternative approaches to pain reduction like hypnosis.  That doesn’t mean that YOU have to be ignorant about the many pain relief benefits of hypnosis as a supplement to or alternative to pain drugs!

The constant wear and tear of chronic pain can undermine a person’s emotional and physical health. What’s worse is that patients who suffer from chronic pain often develop reactions to their pain that actually increase their painful experience. This cycle becomes more powerful over time. Many of these unfortunate sufferers begin to think of their pain as normal and fear they will never be able to enjoy the lives they left behind.

I hope my guest blog helps change their perception.

That brings me back to hypnosis. Hypnosis can help people reduce or eliminate all types of pain – pain that results from injury or diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, as well as the chronic, medically unexplained pain found in syndromes like fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.

There are many factors that can impact the way a person experiences pain. These include stress, anticipation, arousal, deeply held beliefs, intentions and expectations. Stress, for example, will almost always intensify any pain experience. Alternatively, techniques like hypnosis lead to pain relief. It’s enlightening to know that we can actually change your painful experience by altering your neuro-physio-emotional tone.

Hypnosis works by helping you learn how to creatively manage stress and to increase your coping and self-regulation skills. By itself, this can make the pain feel less urgent and more manageable, thus, putting joy back into life!

Despite the slick marketing out there, research has repeatedly shown that quick stop smoking programs are questionably successful, if ever successful long-term.   However, getting to and eliminating the reason for the smoking habit gets lasting results!

Yes, we do hear of people who quit smoking cold turkey, with hypnosis, patches and sheer willpower…but we don’t hear that they ended up taking up other habits (symptom migration) or intensifying others (overeating, overworking, gambling, etc) to manage the severe anxiety that drives all unwanted habits.  We don’t hear that later most of those smokers took up smoking again, only to smoke even more when they relapsed, because nothing was done to eliminate the anxiety that drives all habits. Hypnotherapy for Addictions

Resolve Addictions with Hypnotherapy

All addicts must know three things in order to recover from their dependency on any substance or behavior: It’s not their fault, they don’t deserve it and regression hypnotherapy with a fully qualified regression hypnotherapist can help them recover permanently from the need to self-medicate deep feelings of hurt, sadness, guilt, shame and grief. (Please note that my reference to fully qualified does not include past life regression or basic hypnosis.)

A large part of my hypnotherapy practice is devoted to addictions issues and helping addicts and substance abusers become free of their mental and physical reliance on substances and behaviors of all kinds – from cigarettes to alcohol, heroin, cocaine, psychiatric drugs, gambling and pornography.  According to my former clients, recovering from the addictiveness and damage of psychiatric drugs is the most challenging.  (more…)

Hypnotherapy for Self-Healing

Hypnotherapy for Mental Illness

Hypnotherapy utilizes the natural state of hypnosis to facilitate the changes clients want.  Hypnosis is as natural as breathing; most everyone experiences it daily.  It is not sleep, unconsciousness, nor is it therapy in of itself.  It’s better described as a day-dream state during which a competent therapist can assist a client to make the desired changes at the subconscious level.

Navigating the Field of Hypnotherapy: From Mental Illness to Emotional Wellness Naturally

Sometimes the interchange of the terms hypnosis and hypnotherapy, hypnotist and hypnotherapist, consulting hypnotist, hypno-psychologist, doctor of hypnosis and so on, cause confusion for those looking for assistance with a particular issue or goal.

In the USA, UK and Canada, several organizations promote hypnosis and hypnotherapy.  Some are simply membership organizations and anyone can join, but two others – The IMDHA (International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association) and the APHP (Association of Professional Hypnosis and Psychology) have specific requirements around medical, dental and clinical hypnotism training.  Because of these strict requirements, hypnotherapy practitioners are skilled to assist with emotional, spiritual and mental illnesses and imbalances.

The APHP have very strict requirements of their members.  Membership and certification of schools is by application and proof of credentialing and training in the field of medical hypnotism. The IMDHA certifies hypnotherapy schools which teach basic hypnotism techniques first, followed by training in the applications of hypnosis for medical (including mental illness) and dental purposes.  The designation earned is Certified Hypnotherapist. Practitioners are trained to work with allied healthcare (mental/dental) professionals in focus areas of regression, medical , dental and behavioral hypnosis.  As a result, regression hypnotherapists are typically skilled at assisting those suffering from mental illness identify and dissolve the root causes of emotional suffering.

Clinical hypnotherapists are able to provide safe, dignified assistance to those suffering mental illness issues without need for a diagnosis and in all clinical settings.   Hypnotherapy practitioners are required to continue their education in the medical/dental areas and remain up-to-date with the advances in this rapidly expanding field.

The Difference Between a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Hypnotist

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.Lao Tzu

With the guidance of a qualified hypnotherapist, one can find their way to their center, discover who they are, heal what ‘hurts’ and free themselves of unproductive past conditioning.

Hypnotherapy Heals

Hypnotherapy is an ‘Inside” Job

Our belief system regarding the safety of our world and our worth was established without our consent, knowledge or conscious input during the very early stages of development, typically before 6-7 years old.  We become hard-wired to a certain sense of self-worth and safety that continues to play a huge role in how we react to life in adulthood.

There is a clear absence of language skills and physical and mental proficiency in a young child – skills that adults take for granted.  But children do have feelings and it is these feelings that guide them.  If they feel safe and secure, they continue their activities; if they feel unsafe and not fully accepted, they develop adaptive behaviors to restore the preferred feeling.  Thus, over time, a person’s personality becomes a reflection of their view of their world. Their brain’s responses to life are entirely consistent with the child’s belief (inner feeling) as to his level of safety and always seek to satisfy the instinctual drive for survival.

A customized regression to root-cause hypnotherapeutic approach will assist clients in finding their way back to pivotal childhood events in a safe, dignified, label-free, drug-free manner.  By guiding them through a subconscious course-correction of those events and a release of all unwanted issues and beliefs, clients can finally resolve the inconsistencies between their actions and desires. PTSD, anger, anxiety attacks, panic attacks, depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and stress-related physical issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Fibromyalgia, all become a thing of the past.  The Mayo Clinic is only one of many esteemed institutions which have highlighted the benefits of hypnotherapy as an alternative to psychiatric drug therapy for emotional issues.

Becoming free of unproductive childhood imprinting allows clients to proceed along their life’s journey free to be them and all that being them means.  Clients enjoy a new sense of being equal to all others – unique but equal.  Hypnotherapy seeks to ensure that all clients fully believe, in the deepest part of their spiritual being, that nothing anyone can think, do or say – and nothing that can ever happen to them, can ever diminish their worth to this Universe.  That’s freedom of the human spirit, the foundation for a fulfilled life!

Hypnosis is such a natural feature of our being that we routinely go in and out of the hypnotic state throughout the day. Most everyone can learn, in just a few minutes, how to hypnotize themselves and willing others, technically making them a ‘hypnotist’. But does that also make them an effective therapist?

Few people who have learned to hypnotize others have the verifiable skills in therapy required to assist others to heal themselves of emotional issues, unwanted habits and physical ailments. Qualified hypnotherapists on the other hand, can provide verifiable credentials of specialized hypnotherapy training and demonstrate advanced skills in the therapeutic aspect of their work; the use of hypnosis facilitates their therapy.

What is the State of Hypnosis?

Being in the state of hypnosis means that a person has narrowed their focus to a single thought or feeling and allowed other mental functions to fade into the background of their mind. Although the brain is not evaluating new data when one narrows their focus to a specific stimuli or set of stimuli as it would if in the fully alert state, it is not comatose, asleep or anesthetized – it is still operating ‘in the background’.
Therefore, hypnosis is merely a state of mind during which a person has suspended reality. Often it involves relaxation, but we can also be in a deep state of focused concentration when panicked, fearful, obsessively washing our hands, or apprehensively waiting on our doctor to share test results.

Why is it Important to Understand Hypnosis?

Because it’s so easy to induce hypnosis in a willing person, we see thousands of ‘hypnotists’ claiming that they can also help people with all sorts of personal issues.

While hypnosis is not harmful, its allure can separate you from your money if you do not keep in mind that it is the ‘therapy’ undertaken while a person is in a focused state of concentration that will help you achieve your goals, not the state itself. To be an effective therapist, one must have not only advanced training in how to use the state of hypnosis effectively, but relevant experience and skills with life and the specific issues to be resolved; these a practitioner does not acquire in a weekend course on how to induce hypnosis.

Questionable Claims by Poorly Trained Hypnotists

Many hypnotists incorrectly claim that hypnosis has a 90-95% stop-smoking success rate, while failing to define ‘success’. Hypnotists who are unable to recognize and address the underlying root-cause of the habit may well leave behind a non-smoking client with heightened anxiety or a new, equally undesirable coping mechanism to handle ‘stress’. It is very common for a person to stop smoking only to become an emotional eater when the underlying reason for the anxiety and stress reactions are not first dissolved – or worse, to return to smoking more heavily.

Similarly, there are so many variables to be considered in safe weight management that hypnotists without significant experience and knowledge of root-cause issues, GMO’s, nutrition, medication side-effects, depression, anxiety and physical conditions may unwittingly lead a weight-loss client to believe that their weight problems will resolve with hypnosis scripts designed to reduce food intake, even though food intake may well not be the problem.

Beware Exaggerated Credentialing

It is not uncommon to hear of hypnotists, with little more than a few hours training in how to induce hypnosis in another, string all manner of unrelated titles behind their names, hoping to appear to be qualified in the medical and dental use of hypnosis. Many even claim they are ‘hypnotherapists’ despite having no therapy skills and experience whatever. Ethical hypnotherapists do not engage in exaggerated credentialing.

Titles such as Doctor of Divinity, Ph.D of Philosophy, and so on, have no bearing on a hypnotists’ ability to help clients resolve emotional hardships, unwanted habits and health issues and are entirely irrelevant to the field of medical and dental hypnotherapy. No real ‘bricks & mortars’ educational facilities offer doctorates or Ph.Ds in hypnosis or hypnotherapy. As seen in many other professions as well, millions of Ph.Ds and doctorates are acquired from on-line diploma mills by the unprincipled.

Choosing the Right Hypnotherapist

So while it is exciting that hypnosis can be easily induced by most people, confusion can result about which practitioner is best for the prospective hypnotherapy client. Thus the need to question more! What is their training in medical and dental hypnotherapy exactly; have they completed their Master Hypnotist and then Hypnotherapist training, or are they simply taking a few hypnosis courses, getting a handful of diplomas from poorly trained ‘instructors’ and joining one of the several organizations that take a membership fee and cavalierly proffer an important-sounding title without any formal testing or supervision? Have they been supervised by a qualified instructor before being unleashed on the public? Did their instructor have a successful hypnotherapy practice prior to instructing, or did they too just take a few courses and then offer to teach others?

Summary

As you can see, practically anyone can be a hypnotist, and any hypnotist can claim to be a hypnotherapist, or appear to have magical powers, but only those who can demystify the hypnotherapeutic process, prove their medical and dental hypnotherapy credentials and support their claims, deserve your patronage if you are seeking to heal yourself physically and emotionally.

Feb 6, 2013:  Kim Warner, Plainfield Ontario Canada sends along this testimonial regarding her experience with Grace Joubarne, Clinical Hypnotherapist.  With her permission it is shared here:

I started seeing Grace in June.  I was not sure about the hypnosis thing but thought it certainly would not hurt!!  I was dealing with various issues but one of the main ones was the problem of not being able to shut my brain off.  For years my first response to all things in life was to start thinking about what could go wrong.  I spent a lot of energy and time worrying about what could happen.  I have horses and the worry about their health and safety was constant and very tiring.  I found I couldn’t enjoy my time with them as it was always over shadowed by the worry of what ifs….what if they trip and hurt themselves, what if they get out of their pasture and get out on the road, what if they choke on their food, what if their water freezes.  Even riding was a function in nerves and worry about what if they spook at something and dump me on my head and hurt themselves doing it, what if I’m hurt and can’t look after them, what if…what if….!!!  On and on it went every day – it was like I couldn’t shut my brain off.  I would have mild anxiety attacks.  And it wasn’t just the horses, I worried about everything and it was affecting my life and I was becoming more and more reclusive.  I would wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to go back to sleep.  Driving in the winter was extremely stressful and when there was bad weather I would stress all day about having to drive home.  I have family that live 3 hours away and trips down to visit them involved days of worrying about the drive down and then for the duration of my visit worrying about the drive back.

I noticed a difference after the first few sessions with Grace.  At first I started to sleep thru the night and then using the coping techniques she taught me I was able to keep my anxiety from developing into anxiety attacks.  As time goes on I catch myself noticing changes I hadn’t realized were happening because they were gradual.  I don’t have to resort to my coping techniques as often and I handle stressful situations in a more relaxed manner.  I am enjoying my horses so much more and although I’m still properly cautious with them and keeping them safe is still a priority it’s no longer an overwhelming worry.  I have also just realized that winter driving is not the huge stressor it used to be.   I approach it calmly and without the high stress level it used to cause.  You have to put the effort in to it but I have been very pleased with the results.  At the age of 49 I find myself starting to enjoy life again after many, many years – decades even.  It’s even more amazing considering how fast I saw the changes starting!  I am finally looking forward to where my life is going and I do think things will only continue to improve.  Life will always have its stresses but how I deal with these stresses is getting better and better.

Contributors to NaturalNews.com, WDDTY.com and hundreds of ethical doctors and scientists are warning of the soft-kill, de-population agenda of the elite, headed by the Rockefeller Foundation since in 1930.

Apparently the elite have set in motion a plan to reduce the population of 7 billion down to 1 billion!  See http://www.infowars.com/for-the-record-rockefeller-soft-kill-depopulation-plan-exposed and http://www.naturalnews.com/036756_depopulation_agenda_eugenics_survivor.html

Bill Gates lists vaccines, GMO foods and medications as the best ways to quickly reduce the world’s population.  See mid-way in the video at http://www.naturalnews.com/034834_Bill_Gates_sperm_infertility.html . The suppliers of these soft-kill ingredients are none other than the same bunch that facilitated the Nazis horrors:  I.G.Farben parent company of Monsanto, BASF, DuPont and Bayer of Aspirin fame (who built and ran Auschwitz).

At https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-X3sJKtVJE Ted Turner explains that the world’s population should be reduced by 70% to result in a young, educated, well-heeled and compliant homogeneous race of people governed as a one-nation world.

The old, poor, uneducated, disadvantaged, indigent, non-white and non-compliant must go.  The Rockefeller Foundation had this to say “The unchecked fertility of the indigent does much to perpetuate poverty, under-education, and underemployment, not only in urban slums, but also in depressed rural areas.

They’ve executed their soft-kill plan with military precision:  people are unwittingly shortening their lives 15-25 years thanks to psychiatric drugs, which are now the leading cause of addictions in North America.  (Anatomy of an Epidemic,  Emperor’s New Drugs).

Since GMO crops have overrun 80-90% of the world, we have more people starving then ever (View: The World According to Monsanto), epidemics of new super-diseases such as Morgellon’s and we endure never-before-known cancers in epidemic proportions.  GMO wheat is addictive and linked to epidemics of diabetes and obesity (Wheat Belly by William Davis, MD).  Monsanto’s aspartame and other artificial sweeteners have repeatedly been linked to brain tumors and their GMO sugar beets worsen the addictive, neuro-toxic effects of sugar.

The Rockefeller Foundation found that gossypol, a toxic polyphenol derived from the cotton plant, was an effective sterilant and there are reports Monsanto has been integrating it into GMO crops.  The rate of Canadian infertility has tripled since 1982 (National Post report, Feb 15, 2012).

The elderly are overprescribed damaging drugs and in North America alone, some 10 million school children are force-fed addictive, brain-damaging psychiatric drugs to keep them quiet. (Commonsense Rebellion, Bruce Levine).

Wondering how only getting rid of the old, the troublesome, the uneducated and the poor is going to reduce the population when people can still have kids to replace the culled?

We are learning that conventional cancer treatments are not only ineffective and in most cases unnecessary (see German New Medicine studies), but that they cause sterility.  One of the ‘side effects’ of psychiatric drugs is low to non-existent libido in adults and the brain damage kids suffer from psychoactive drugs can ruin their whole life.

Rockefeller Foundation admitted funding and developing anti-fertility vaccines intended for “mass-scale distribution” (Jurriaan Maessen Infowars.com March 26, 2012).  These can be hidden in ‘regular’ anti-viral vaccines at will.

Misleading advertising, drug company collusion with unethical doctors and scientists, mass rigging of clinical trials, controlled mainstream media, Ivy League university leadership and promotion and fear-mongering about every little virus on the planet has caused us to run to killer vaccines and antibiotics.  The over-prescription of antibiotics, especially to children, has caused mutant super-bugs, epidemics of previously rarely known problems in children, franken-bacteria such as the flesh-eating variety and life-ending immune system issues.

As reported in Natural News Aug 2012:  Importantly, vaccines contain stealth cancer viruses that are passed along through multiple generations. The SV40 viruses introduced to the population through polio vaccines in the 1950’s still exists today in the grandchildren of those who were first vaccinated. This is openly admitted by top scientists who helped develop these vaccines. http://www.naturalnews.com/033584_Dr_Maurice_Hilleman_SV40.html

Iatrogenic disease, defined as disease or death caused by medical treatment, is the leading cause of death in North America!   Any surprise there?

 What to do?

First, heed the warnings of ethical doctors and scientists about vaccine damage and chemical medications (psychoactive or otherwise) and request natural treatments, avoid non-organic red meat and pork and any meat that doesn’t have its original bones and skin on (thus avoiding  ‘meat-glue’).  Grow a simple organic vegetable garden and triple filter city water, especially if treated with fluoride, another proven neuro-toxin.

Avoid non-organic wheat and grains and GMO foods like the plague they are. Support efforts to take back our food supply from Monsanto et al by buying from local organic farmers, support global efforts to force GMO labeling, support child advocacy groups calling for an end to the psychiatric drugging of children and calls to ban psychiatry altogether. Push your MPs and MPPs to do their jobs.

Avoid mainstream TV, especially News, as the content is controlled by the corporations and consumer scientists.  Medical information on mainstream media is almost exclusively pharmaceutical propaganda. Follow NaturalNews.com and other independent news media, such as RT TV.

My primary care giver is a naturopathic medical doctor ; my ‘medicine’ is homeopathic and herbal – if it’s good enough for the British Royal family, it’s certainly good enough for me. I handle stress with Reiki, massage, hypnotherapy and meditation – and good friends. I work at something I love – clinical hypnotherapy.

My work as a Clinical Hypnotherapist allows me to assist people to heal themselves of emotional issues by using drug-free, label-free regression hypnotherapy, so they too can avoid pharmaceutical poisoning.  Natural remedies and treatments and organic foods enhance life; chemicals and drugs, as we are learning the hard way, kills.

Hypnotherapy provides drug-free assistance with your issues, from insomnia to anxiety, depression, anger, weight and pain management and more.   ~Much spiritual love, Grace

NoDoz_caffeine_tablets_on_blackPsychiatric medications are dangerous and too often deadly.  Studies since 1970 have proven this over and over again.  In fact, the evidence is so clear that the FDA and Health Canada as well as many international regulatory agencies around the world have issued WARNINGS about the increased risk of suicide, homicide, agression, emotional blunting, major depression and psychosis all caused by antidepressant use.  According to years of independent research and review of studies, the use of psyciatric medication to treat any mental illness is almost guaranteed to worsen the issue. ETHICAL DOCTORS WARN PEOPLE TO AVOID PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT ALTOGETHER.

BEFORE you ingest any psychiatric drug, review the over 4,000 incidents of horrific results of antidepressant use between 2008-2011  at  SSRI Stories  .  This site lists only the worse treatment outcomes and represent about 1% of the adverse reactions people experience.  These medications are highly addictive and while the medications cause terrible side-effects while on dose, increasing or decreasing the medication doses quickly can easily result in severely worsening conditions.

To fully understand the brain abnormalities caused by the drug treatment of depression as well as other psychiatric drugs, be sure to read  Medication Madness by Dr. Peter Breggin, an international court-appointed medical expert on the brain-damaging, addictive properties of all psychiatric drugs.   It is no coincidence that of the last 18 rampages in the US alone, 14 killers were reported to have been on psychiatric drugs.  The other 4 cases are presumed to be linked to psychiatric drugs, but the information about their medical treatment has been suppressed. Did you know research is showing that having an abundance of money, good looks and lots of admirers can actually make you feel less happy? As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I see many clients caught in the web of chasing the wrong goals in life.

According to the latest research, published in the June issue of the Journal of Research in Personality which seems to confirm what Clinical Hypnotherapists have always known, goals are important, but the ones we are traditionally raised to believe are most important to our wellness and happiness often turn out to leave us wanting on a deeper emotional and psychological level.

Researchers studied 147 alumni from two universities during their second year after graduation. The post-graduates (chosen because the 2 years after graduation seem to be the most pivitol to the later success of graduates), were assessed on satisfaction with life, self-esteem, anxiety, physical signs of stress, and the experience of positive and negative emotions.

Respondents also reported on whether they had reached their extrinsic goals (money, looks, etc) and intrinsic goals (helping others, community involvement, deep enduring relationships, etc) and to what degree.

The conclusion was that in accordance with the pscyological belief that the more you are committed to a goal the more likely you are to achieve it, most respondents did succeed in reaching their goals. But the satisfaction derived from the success depended on the type of goal (extrinsic or intrinsic).

Contrary to the psychological tradition which holds that all goals succeeded will result in wellness, this study showed the achievement of extrinsic goals involving money and image-making actually resulted in unwellness and even illness. Materialistic goals resulted in more frustration, anger, stress reactions and the like…all illness-related emotions and behaviors.

In complete contrast, those seeking intrinsic goals (community service, helping others, close relationships) were much more satisfied with their lives. These post-graduates expressed gratitude, wellness, feelings of positive emotion, balance and harmony.

Check out the video about this study: “Money vs.Happiness” video produced by ScienCentral (May 14, 2009).

If you have been conditioned to chase the goals that leave you only temporarily satisfied and want to learn how to connect with your deeper needs and aspirations, contact a competent and qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist. At GracePlace Wellness we guide clients to emotional and physical wellness,by helping them redirect their energies from materialistic goals to more satisfying intrinsic aspirations. This is done through the use of the subconscious mind…the seat of all achievement.
