Hypnotherapy for Self-Healing

Hypnotherapy for Mental Illness

 Hypnotherapy utilizes the natural state of hypnosis to facilitate the changes clients want.  Hypnosis is as natural as breathing; most everyone experiences it daily.  It is not sleep, unconsciousness, nor is it therapy in of itself.  It’s better described as a day-dream state during which a competent therapist can assist a client to make the desired changes at the subconscious level.

Navigating the Field of Hypnotherapy: From Mental Illness to Emotional Wellness Naturally

Sometimes the interchange of the terms hypnosis and hypnotherapy, hypnotist and hypnotherapist, consulting hypnotist, hypno-psychologist, doctor of hypnosis and so on, cause confusion for those looking for assistance with a particular issue or goal.

In the USA, UK and Canada, several organizations promote hypnosis and hypnotherapy.  Some are simply membership organizations and anyone can join, but two others – The IMDHA (International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association) and the APHP (Association of Professional Hypnosis and Psychology) have specific requirements around medical, dental and clinical hypnotism training.  Because of these strict requirements, hypnotherapy practitioners are skilled to assist with emotional, spiritual and mental illnesses and imbalances.

The APHP have very strict requirements of their members.  Membership and certification of schools is by application and proof of credentialing and training in the field of medical hypnotism. The IMDHA certifies hypnotherapy schools which teach basic hypnotism techniques first, followed by training in the applications of hypnosis for medical (including mental illness) and dental purposes.  The designation earned is Certified Hypnotherapist. Practitioners are trained to work with allied healthcare (mental/dental) professionals in focus areas of regression, medical , dental and behavioral hypnosis.  As a result, regression hypnotherapists are typically skilled at assisting those suffering from mental illness identify and dissolve the root causes of emotional suffering.

Clinical hypnotherapists are able to provide safe, dignified assistance to those suffering mental illness issues without need for a diagnosis and in all clinical settings.   Hypnotherapy practitioners are required to continue their education in the medical/dental areas and remain up-to-date with the advances in this rapidly expanding field.

The Difference Between a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Hypnotist

 Girl_suffering_form_anxiety     To get healthy and stay healthy, you need the truth … the truth about what is in your water, your food and especially how your mind is conditioned.  When  clients struggling with mental illness seek my clinical hypnotherapy assistance to turn their emotional and physical health around safely we start with the facts:

  • Conventional medicine is not about ‘curing’ or ‘healing’; it is designed to suppress symptoms, which inevitably rise up as something worse later;
  • The medical-pharmaceutical complex is engaging in extraordinary levels of medical fraud, misrepresentation of facts, willful negligence, manipulation of clinical trials, control of mainstream media, manufacturing of mental illness, suppression of legitimate health information, ghost-writing and collusion – the result is that experts have deemed much of the information in ‘esteemed’ medical journals worthless and dangerous;
  • Mainstream medical information is controlled by Big Pharma – natural healings of cancer, mental illness and catastrophic illnesses are censored;
  • Mental illness is not brain disease. Brain disease has objective scientific evidence; ‘mental illness’ is nothing more than opinion with nothing to back it up. Mental illness is a term conjured up entirely by psychiatrists to meet the needs of pharmaceutical companies to sell illness-causing drugs. Further, diagnoses are ‘voted’ in and out on the whim of psychiatrists and drug companies – not a single mental illness is backed up by science;
  • According to psychiatrists, normal human emotion and reaction is mental illness and everyone needs to be ‘treated’. The conventional treatment for normal human emotions results in worsening conditions and epidemic levels of disability;
  • SWAG – (Scientifically Wild-Assed Guess) = the way psychiatry operates;
  • The brain is not the center of emotion; it reacts to emotions.  I know of no one who has ever experienced a brain-break when hurt, betrayed, abandoned, neglected, abused, etc, but everyone has experienced heartbreak(more…)

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.Lao Tzu

With the guidance of a qualified hypnotherapist, one can find their way to their center, discover who they are, heal what ‘hurts’ and free themselves of unproductive past conditioning.

Hypnotherapy Heals

Hypnotherapy is an ‘Inside” Job

Our belief system regarding the safety of our world and our worth was established without our consent, knowledge or conscious input during the very early stages of development, typically before 6-7 years old.  We become hard-wired to a certain sense of self-worth and safety that continues to play a huge role in how we react to life in adulthood.

There is a clear absence of language skills and physical and mental proficiency in a young child – skills that adults take for granted.  But children do have feelings and it is these feelings that guide them.  If they feel safe and secure, they continue their activities; if they feel unsafe and not fully accepted, they develop adaptive behaviors to restore the preferred feeling.  Thus, over time, a person’s personality becomes a reflection of their view of their world. Their brain’s responses to life are entirely consistent with the child’s belief (inner feeling) as to his level of safety and always seek to satisfy the instinctual drive for survival.

A customized regression to root-cause hypnotherapeutic approach will assist clients in finding their way back to pivotal childhood events in a safe, dignified, label-free, drug-free manner.  By guiding them through a subconscious course-correction of those events and a release of all unwanted issues and beliefs, clients can finally resolve the inconsistencies between their actions and desires. PTSD, anger, anxiety attacks, panic attacks, depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and stress-related physical issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Fibromyalgia, all become a thing of the past.  The Mayo Clinic is only one of many esteemed institutions which have highlighted the benefits of hypnotherapy as an alternative to psychiatric drug therapy for emotional issues.

Becoming free of unproductive childhood imprinting allows clients to proceed along their life’s journey free to be them and all that being them means.  Clients enjoy a new sense of being equal to all others – unique but equal.  Hypnotherapy seeks to ensure that all clients fully believe, in the deepest part of their spiritual being, that nothing anyone can think, do or say – and nothing that can ever happen to them, can ever diminish their worth to this Universe.  That’s freedom of the human spirit, the foundation for a fulfilled life!

It is easy to deceive anyone who is not expecting to be deceived, especially if they have been conditioned since childhood to trust their doctors and Health Canada ( or the FDA).  As a result, every 14 minutes prescription drugs kill a patient!

Widespread Big Pharma practices that ensure patients and doctors don’t learn about the true dangers of prescription drugs are staggering in their level of deceit.

Not only are drug company clinical trials conducted over a mere 2-6 weeks with selected participants who do not remotely reflect the usual patient population, but many clinical trials are ended early because of severe drug reactions, including death. These results are hidden away in drug company vaults until a lawsuit forces their release…but by then it is very much too late. We are not hearing the truth about these drugs from Health Canada or our doctors; we are hearing it from lawyers and victims.

Marcia Angell, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, clarifies that aspect of the scandal:  “It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgment of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of The New England Journal of Medicine.”(Marcia Angell, MD, The New York Review of Books, January 15, 2009)

Terence Young, a Canadian Member of Parliament, author of Death by Prescription, lost a child to a prescription drug adverse effect.  Since then he has been investigating how drugs are approved and monitored and is advocating for changes in the ‘wild-west’ way the medical-pharmaceutical cartel is permitted to operate in Canada.  He testified during a Canadian Senate Standing Committee Hearing (Oct 2012) on the Post-approval monitoring of prescription drugs (see testimony mid-way in video)   that in very recent years, 27 drugs that were supposed to be safe were taken off the market, but as in the case of Vioxx, which killed some 65,000 before being pulled, not until many had been maimed or killed.

As Young pointed out, adverse drug reaction information is buried in linguistic acrobatics in medication pamphlets and medical ghostwriting.  But the bigger problem with the system is that drugs can be fast-tracked to market on the say-so of the drug company, without testing and without proper safety measures in place.  In fact, Health Canada does no independent testing and maintains no adverse reaction database.  Talk about the fox guarding the hen-house!

There is no post-approval monitoring of drugs, no national database for the reporting of adverse effects by the public and if/when doctors decide to report adverse effects to the drug companies, the drug companies are free to downgrade the effect…so that suicide attempt could be classed as aggression or depression.  Most times doctors dismiss adverse effects as being the result of the issue being treated!

As Dr. Healy, CEO and principal founder of Data Based Medicine Americas Ltd stated: “It is important to distinguish between suicide and death by misadventure. Suicide is the deliberate termination of one’s existence while in one’s right mind. Taking one’s own life under the influence of drugs is death by misadventure, not suicide. This distinction has huge legal, financial, insurance, and religious implications, as well as being of great importance to family and friends.”

As Young noted, in Canada death by adverse  pharmaceutical drug reaction  is too often listed on a coroner’s report as ‘death by natural causes’.  Adverse reactions due to pharmaceutical drugs alone cause 10,000 Canadian deaths each year and 150,000 injuries, but as Janet Currie, Director of Psychiatric Medication Awareness Group testified at the same Senate Standing Committee Hearing, these figures represent a very small portion of the actual damage incurred.  Most are not being reported to, or addressed by, Health Canada, the very agency we are conditioned to believe is on guard for us.

Off-Label Prescribing

Another major problem noted by Young and Currie was the profoundly unsafe practices of off-label prescribing by doctors, as this practice accounts for 5-20% of prescribing practices in North America.  Particularly troubling are doctor claims that they do not have the time to actually look into drug company claims of safety and efficacy…they just follow drug company dictates.

Off-label prescribing happens when a doctor gives you a drug that Health Canada has has not approved to treat the condition you complain of. This practice is legal and common, thus even toddlers are getting drugs never tested on children and never approved for use in children.  Besides begging the question “Why bother with Health Canada or the approval of any drugs at all?” we can also ask “Are off-label drugs safe?”.

It’s hard to see how they can be safe, since most drugs have side-effects that cause problems beyond the original issue a patient sought help with.  Bottom-line, it seems that because of the fact that Health Canada does not do any of its own testing, relies entirely on drug company claims, does not monitor drugs after approval including those fast-tracked, that fast-tracked medications do not have any scrutiny before or after being marketed and that a drug can be prescribed at will by any physician for any reason and without explanation if something goes wrong, it is quite safe to say that anytime you put any pharmaceutical medication into your body you are playing a game with worse odds then Russian Roulette.

Drug Company Free-For-All

As a result of what seems to be a free-for-all prescription drug system with no safety precautions in place and what appears to be an absence of monitoring or consequences (except to the patient) for the drug companies and doctors who prescribed these medications, the fact is also that psychiatric drugs, heart medications and antibiotics are commonly prescribed off label.  Thus antibiotics are prescribed for viral infections even though they are designed to destroy bacteria only, and also, more often then not, when neither a bacterial nor a viral infection can be ascertained. Typically drugs are prescribed without any attempt to try natural remedies and therapies and/or dietary and lifestyle changes first, to the serious detriment of the patient who is looking for good health.

It’s not uncommon for depression medications to be used to treat chronic pain.  But what about the addictiveness and brain disabling effects of the antidepressants?  Well, the fact is that those little bits of information are not provided to patients even when the risks overwhelmingly outweigh the benefits and even when there are many natural alternatives for chronic pain.  In fact, hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and meditation have been shown to be very effective in resolving chronic pain issues.

Study after study is showing alarming issues with vaccines and antibiotics.  Ethical doctors everywhere are urging people not to vaccinate themselves or their children and to use antibiotics ONLY in emergency situations.  Studies are repeatedly showing that statin drugs  cause adverse effects including muscle deterioration and are rarely as effective in controlling blood pressures as natural therapies that address lifestyle and dietary factors.  Let’s remember that the heart is a muscle!  Worse yet, anti-cholesterol drugs are shown to be linked to cardiac issues, increased risk of diabetes and memory loss …for starters.

The US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) studies have shown that some newer antipsychotic drugs typically used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are also prescribed for depression, dementia, and other conditions despite there being no evidence that these drugs work. As revealed in the January 14, 2009 AHRQ study “Use of Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs Increases Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death in Adults“, they increase the risk of cardiac death.

These facts are even more disturbing when we learn (Medication Madness by Dr. P. Breggin and others) that depression and schizophrenia sufferers do not have chemical imbalances  and can usually resolve their conditions very well within 6 months to 1 year with few, if any, relapses when the patient IS NOT medicated.  Once medicated, these issues worsen, become chronic, severe and irreversible.  The fairytale that any of these drugs are ‘helpful’ in the long-run is actually a tale of willful harm for profits, well documented by ethical doctors and scientists since 1970.

That relapse rates increase as a direct result of psychiatric drug intervention, that drug therapy in seniors seriously increases suicide rates, that drugs actually cause depression and drug therapy increases the rates of stroke is never discussed by doctors or mainstream media.  This is astounding considering the many studies showing the absolute ineffectiveness of antidepressant drugs and the increased cancer risk associated with their use.

Psychiatric and pain management drugs are now the gateway drugs to illicit drug use and in fact facilitate the addiction to drugs with alarming ease. Most patients are not told these drugs are highly addictive and when the doctor is confronted later, typically there continues to be denial.  Doctors are not trained in the safe withdrawal of a patient from an addictive drug, thus patients find themselves trying to navigate a withdrawal mine-field alone.

With the newer psychiatric drugs, we are seeing epidemics of drug-induced bipolar, cardiovascular, kidney, pancreatic and liver issues.  These were rare in adults, almost unheard of in children…now psychiatric drugs have helped create an epidemic of drug-induced chronic physical illnesses.

The medicalization of non-diseases such as emotional reactions and everyday life experiences harms both the individuals so labeled and society’s fabric. The problem is that the treatments are causing epidemics of chronic diseases such as diabetes in addition to medication madness.

You can add to that the new drug-pushing habit of convincing people, through equally unsupported claims of ‘genetic’ links to illness, to undergo unnecessary surgery and ingest damaging drugs.

NoDoz_caffeine_tablets_on_blackPsychiatric medications are dangerous and too often deadly.  Studies since 1970 have proven this over and over again.  In fact, the evidence is so clear that the FDA and Health Canada as well as many international regulatory agencies around the world have issued WARNINGS about the increased risk of suicide, homicide, agression, emotional blunting, major depression and psychosis all caused by antidepressant use.  According to years of independent research and review of studies, the use of psyciatric medication to treat any mental illness is almost guaranteed to worsen the issue. ETHICAL DOCTORS WARN PEOPLE TO AVOID PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT ALTOGETHER.

BEFORE you ingest any psychiatric drug, review the over 4,000 incidents of horrific results of antidepressant use between 2008-2011  at  SSRI Stories  .  This site lists only the worse treatment outcomes and represent about 1% of the adverse reactions people experience.  These medications are highly addictive and while the medications cause terrible side-effects while on dose, increasing or decreasing the medication doses quickly can easily result in severely worsening conditions.

To fully understand the brain abnormalities caused by the drug treatment of depression as well as other psychiatric drugs, be sure to read  Medication Madness by Dr. Peter Breggin, an international court-appointed medical expert on the brain-damaging, addictive properties of all psychiatric drugs.   It is no coincidence that of the last 18 rampages in the US alone, 14 killers were reported to have been on psychiatric drugs.  The other 4 cases are presumed to be linked to psychiatric drugs, but the information about their medical treatment has been suppressed. At GracePlace Wellness I work with children presumed to have behavioral problems. However, as I teach parents, the child is never to blame.

The reason we look to the child for resolution is because adults presume that a child’s mind is developed to the level of their own and thus that a child should be able to reason things out, understand cause and effect and have the verbal skills to explain themselves.

When a child is born, he is virtually born blank in terms of language skills, physical skills and mental nimbleness that adults take for granted. But they do have feelings and it is these feelings that guide them. If they feel safe and secure, they continue their behavior; if they feel unsafe and not accepted, they adjust their behavior to restore the preferred feeling. Thus their personalities develop to satisfy their evolving perception of their world. Their brain’s reactions and responses to their world are entirely consistent with the child’s belief of his level of safety.

Because of a profound lack of experience with life, children have little information with which to put stimuli into proper context. Thus rarely are stimuli put into the context an adult would expect. The more information a person has to draw on, the better and more reliable the context, thus it’s not hard to see that most of a child’s life is about doing the best they can to understand their world with little, if any, relevant information at hand.

The expectation that a child can engage in deductive reasoning, put events and feelings into proper and productive perspective, or recognize patterns is truly unreasonable, especially in children under twelve. They react to stressors, but with limited resources, knowledge and experience, thus the resulting behavior seems unacceptable to the adult.

All negative behavior in children has, at its root, fear. The more aggressive the child, the more fearful you can be assured he is. When the feeling is that their very survival is at risk, a child literally panics and he expresses this panic in what, for an adult, would seem to be unacceptable behavior.

The overriding factor for all beings is the relentless instinct to survive. A problem child is a child trying, in his not yet fully developed mind, to survive as best he can…and adults are not understanding the message often enough to help him.

Ethical doctors everywhere are warning parents to avoid putting a child on psychiatric drugs…they are brain-damaging. The very part of their brain (pre-frontal cortex) that a child needs in order to reason, self-regulate emotions, remember detail and so on, becomes disabled, often permanently, by psychiatric drugs and often within a few weeks of being drugged. Much of the violence we see today is directly linked to psychiatric treatment.

Note:  psychiatric drugs are highly addictive…NEVER, EVER take a child off drugs quickly.  Like adults, to be safe, they must be weaned off slowly and watched carefully at all times as often the most vulnerable time for suicidal thoughts is during the weaning period.  For resources:  How to Wean Off Psychoactive Drugs Safely at www.theroadback.org

Iatrogenic illness and disease are most commonly defined as a type of symptom brought about as a consequence of therapy or treatment; a physical and/or mental condition or disorder arising from a medical treatment. Secondary lymphedema occurring after cancer treatment, mental illness as a result of over-medication, iatrogenic hypothroidism and Ritalin-induced psychoses are all examples of iatrogenic illnesses.

Drugs Associated With Iatrogenic Effects
More than a million adults in Britain were hooked on drugs prescribed for them by their GPs, a 2001 BBC documentary revealed. In particular it noted that benzodiazepines (eg. lorazepam), caused millions of adults lives to spin out of control, with withdrawal symptoms as severe as those experienced by heroin addicts. The anxiety attacks reported were worse then the symptoms patients originally sought treatment for. (BBC 2001)

According to T. Robert, 2003, in America, treatment and physician-induced deaths topped the charts as the leading cause of death. OxyContin alone is linked to such an alarming rate of death and addiction that in the USA even the FDA has gotten into the act and forced Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer, to provide more accurate data on deaths and abuse. Some 59 prescription drugs in the United States contain oxycodone and it has fast become a choice drug for addicts who rob pharmacies, forge prescriptions and align with unethical physicians to feed their habit.

According to Robert Whitaker, Zyprexa, an atypical antipsychotic, was linked to serious, in some cases life-threatening side effects requiring hospitalization in 22% of the 2500 adults tested in six-week clinical trials. In fact, during testing, 20 volunteers died, 12 by suicide. A study presented in 2004 at the AACAP is believed to be the first to find the link between Zyprexa and insulin and obesity issues in children and teens. Despite ligation since, doctors still prescribe this deadly drug to thousands.

Prozac and Iatrogenic Illnesses
Within one decade, 39,000 adverse reports about Prozac were sent to Medwatch; a number thought to represent only one percent of the actual number of such events estimated to be 100 times as many (roughly four million people) (Mezzman, 2005). This makes Prozac the most criticized drug in America. Prozac is marketed to the public as a safe drug, and yet millions are complaining about mania, psychotic depression, nervousness, anxiety, agitation, hostility, hallucinations, memory loss, tremors, impotence, convulsions, insomnia, nausea, suicidal urges…all very serious symptoms. (Mezzman, 2005)

In a 2005 interview of Robert Whitaker by Terry Messman, the author of Mad in America states: “….In this county, we have Medwatch, a reporting system in which we report adverse events about psychiatric drugs to the FDA. By the way, the FDA tries to keep these adverse reports from the public…it’s very hard to get these reports….Once we got the other SSRIs on the market, like Zoloft and Paxil, by 1994, four SSRI antidepressants were among the top 20 most complained about drugs on the FDA’s Medwatch list.” As Whitaker points out throughout his interview, the adverse effects, such as suicidal ideation, hallucinations and mania are not minor inconveniences.

Marketing in Madness
This is a must see 177 minute documentary of more facts about the victimization of patients all over North America. It really does pull everything you need to know together in a way that will make you aware of the sure-to-be consequences of starting on drugs to manage the stressors of everyday life.

What Can be Done About Iatrogenic Illness and Death
It would seem that about the only sure way to avoid drug-induced (iatrogenic) illness is to avoid drug therapy as much as possible in favor of safe, natural remedies and therapies such as homeopathy, which is very popular in Europe where even the British Royal Family physician is a homeopath, and hypnotherapy, which has repeatedly been shown highly effective for everything from irritable bowel syndrome pain to anxiety, stress and depressive feelings.

When money is the driving force behind the prescription of such deadly drugs, one must ensure they do not trust blindly. As Ronald Reagan once said, “trust, but verify.” Any effort to verify claims of the safety of any drug prescribed will soon enlighten a patient to the fact that pharmaceuticals cause more harm than good.

Did you know research is showing that having an abundance of money, good looks and lots of admirers can actually make you feel less happy? As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I see many clients caught in the web of chasing the wrong goals in life.

According to the latest research, published in the June issue of the Journal of Research in Personality which seems to confirm what Clinical Hypnotherapists have always known, goals are important, but the ones we are traditionally raised to believe are most important to our wellness and happiness often turn out to leave us wanting on a deeper emotional and psychological level.

Researchers studied 147 alumni from two universities during their second year after graduation. The post-graduates (chosen because the 2 years after graduation seem to be the most pivitol to the later success of graduates), were assessed on satisfaction with life, self-esteem, anxiety, physical signs of stress, and the experience of positive and negative emotions.

Respondents also reported on whether they had reached their extrinsic goals (money, looks, etc) and intrinsic goals (helping others, community involvement, deep enduring relationships, etc) and to what degree.

The conclusion was that in accordance with the pscyological belief that the more you are committed to a goal the more likely you are to achieve it, most respondents did succeed in reaching their goals. But the satisfaction derived from the success depended on the type of goal (extrinsic or intrinsic).

Contrary to the psychological tradition which holds that all goals succeeded will result in wellness, this study showed the achievement of extrinsic goals involving money and image-making actually resulted in unwellness and even illness. Materialistic goals resulted in more frustration, anger, stress reactions and the like…all illness-related emotions and behaviors.

In complete contrast, those seeking intrinsic goals (community service, helping others, close relationships) were much more satisfied with their lives. These post-graduates expressed gratitude, wellness, feelings of positive emotion, balance and harmony.

Check out the video about this study: “Money vs.Happiness” video produced by ScienCentral (May 14, 2009).

If you have been conditioned to chase the goals that leave you only temporarily satisfied and want to learn how to connect with your deeper needs and aspirations, contact a competent and qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist. It is astounding on many levels how parental indifference can impact a child’s life and society. My practice sees many children who have been handed the latest technology and ‘allowances of money’ only to find themselves trying to manage fear, insecurity and intense loneliness alone. I meet many parents who have no idea what is going on in their child’s life or where they are when not home.

Time after time I interview children in my hypnotherapy practice whose parents have treated them as apprenticing adults – little people expected to have the experience and knowledge of most adults – while the children became increasingly more unable to cope with the onslaught of stressors such as cyber bullies, junk foods entirely lacking nutrition, violence and sex on TV and intense loneliness and despair.

Increasingly children are expected to make their way in life without the guidance they need to remain safe and secure. Many children get to interact with their parents in a meaningful way for barely a few minutes each day, yet quality time with at least one parent for several hours per day is vitally important to a young mind struggling to understand a world he/she has no experience with.

It seems that the more parents rely on technology including TV and communication devices, such as cell phones, to educate and ‘babysit’ their children, the bond between parent and child is strained and the education about life the child receives is seriously deficient in the aspects that would be in the child’s best interest. TV commercials make children lifelong consumers of junk food and unhealthy habits and the TV ‘sex and violence’ programming is surely the biggest culprit in selling early sex, unhealthy lifestyles and aggressive behavior to children as the way to live.

We now have the highest rate of child and teen suicide in history. Children are not at fault for being unable to manage in a world that is becoming increasingly more frightening and dangerous. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that a child feels safe and secure, loved and lovable as they make their way through life. It is a parents’ obligation to be there physically and emotionally for a child…it is not enough to give them money and tell them to find something to eat.

We need to get back to letting children be children and to acting like nurturers and caring human beings toward our children to ensure they feel confident in themselves, are learning, feeling safe and secure, loved and lovable, protected and cared about. That requires parental involvement in the child’s life…parental time and physical presence, understanding, caring and love on a daily basis.

I have yet to meet a cell phone or IPod which could replace a real live caring caregiver. I have seen the devastation of a child raised by the TV set…fearful, lacking confidence, helpless, soaked in beliefs that violence is standard fair in our world and that junk food is all there is to eat.

I hear children say they feel invisible, worthless, less than nothing, not even as good as the household pet which gets the extra attention they crave. I see children crying because they are scared, lonely and feel helpless to be able to change their circumstances. They cannot articulate what they need; all they know is that they don’t have ‘it’. It seems that intense loneliness from spending so much time alone is the prevailing condition in children today.

I have yet to hear a child say they felt unhappy because they didn’t receive the latest most popular runners, the latest technology or the clothes that are in fad. But I routinely hear them complain that mom and dad never make time for them, that they aren’t important in their house because mom/dad spends more time with the pet. Many have said they wished they were a dog or cat so mom/dad would pat them too. One child said that if he were a dog, his mom would tell him she loved him too because she always told the dog she loved it, but never him.

I personally think the most loving thing any parent can do for their children is give them their time…real quality time. Not time spent watching TV together, but real time walking outdoors or playing together, for example. Get rid of the TV; limit cell phone and technology use to a half hour per day. Monitor all texting and calls to be certain your child is not trying to manage bullies and inappropriate ‘friend’ behavior. Help them with their homework, insist on sit-down meals….walk, talk, love with them!

Remember that children grow up to be adults with a vivid memory of how you made them feel! If they are not your priority and first love now, don’t expect to be theirs later.
